2024 Season General Discussion Thread

My concern with Jenkins is that he’s got nothing other than a head down carry and he doesn’t have much post contact in him, no offload, and most nrl clubs won’t see that bringing much off the bench.

I like his athleticism and work rate though. He can play
A 6'4 dude who was a sprinter who's a winger turned prop, there's some more natural talent there that can be extracted from work with a forward coach or something. That's rare skills in a prop who's pretty good physically. Apparently Dragons are pretty keen, There's 100% something there.

Yeah he used to be an outside back, then an edge and now a middle. Just hasn’t developed ball skills, footwork, an offload or anything at this stage. And doesn’t have monster numbers with his carries either.

No doubt with his size and athleticism he’s got something there though like you say. Interesting prospect to say the least

Reminds me of this.

Giddey getting drafted meme, Bad at everything hahahaha but I 100% get what you mean, I reckon with how low prop stocks are he'll get somewhere but Tuki 100% has more NRL potential with his skillset.

Can you coach those skills into him this late?

RCG in for Liu is a definite upgrade if true. Tuki really looked like a plodder in his first stint but showed enough later to be an interesting development addition. Otherwise there wasn’t very much on show other than an entertaining game.

I think he goes pretty well. Whilst what HS says is true about being very much up and down, what I like about him is his first contact in D is very physical and shoulder first. He has very good technique in D.

I read about a week ago that there are about 5 NRL clubs interested in him. I think he has a future

On a losing side, I thought Purcell was very good and is a big hitter in D. Dont know anything about him but is a good edge defender based on todays game.

Purcell was a T&T in preseason with us in 2023 and played at Tweed, Was in the Newcastle system since he was 15 before that, If he's a big hitter that's why he's not here anymore. /s.

There's a fair few guys like that in those tweener second row/prop positions that have changed this year and it's probably the easiest position to recruit in IMO, There's probably 6/7 guys I think who could do a job in NRL squads and maybe more but age is an issue, There's a fair few Randall types out there tbh, Sam Coster if he was 25 would be a massive target for teams IMO in this version of NRL, He's 31 though.

Tuki certainly has good ball skills snd a good offload which is a point of difference but it is his defensive technique which IMO is deficient where he just does not use his shoulder in the tackle and was not first in the tackle on most occasions. I am ok Tuki being on a development contract to see what we can get out of him as his 2nd stint in attack was good but needs huge amount of work on the other side of the ball.

There’s no way 5 clubs are genuinely interested in him lol. Massive beat up by his manager.

Coster was just as good at 25. Still no NRL interest.

A few years ago everyone was on Tristan Powell like he was a certainty to play consistent NRL because of how good he was at Easts. Went to melb and still couldn’t crack it.

Point is, a lot of middles who lack certain skill sets despite looking good at cup - which is kind of why I’m cautious about Jenkins - just don’t translate that effectively to NRL.

And I’m moreso getting at how difficult is to recruit from reserve grade, as opposed to who’s worth signing and who’s not. That’s why Tuki on a dev deal was so good - worst case if it doesn’t work out you haven’t risked much.

100%, I was looking for props to come and Tristian Powell is absolutely braining it still in the NSW cup but he's 30 and played 2 games or so of NRL I think as an interchange or 18th man, I only mentioned Coster cause he moved to lock like the new trends with the small middles who can tackle.

Schoupps stats were so far ahead of everyone and he was what we needed in a team as a metre eater who could defend a bit and he sucked ass but at cup, His metre eating was so far above any others in the league it was ridiculous and in his games, Seve looks like Mal Meninga at this level.

Tristo is only 23 mate

Joe Stimson had a game where he ran like 250m and had 73 tackle breaks I can’t believe I didn’t think of using that example earlier haha

Should've known that since he was in the system, got him confused with the other Storm prop at the time.....

I meant Jordan Grant hahahahaha sorry.

I think one of the problems with Tristian particularly at the Storm was his lack of size for front rower and if you dont also have the skillset, then he was always going to struggle down there.

At least Jenkins has good size and speed so he will at least have the physical attributes. He does have good D already but he will need to develop his skillset on the attacking side as HS mentions.

On an aside note, he was a winger for NSW under 16’s in 2017 so it is a big transition.

I've watched most of the games since Tuki was rumoured to be signed and Cooper isn't that much better defensively but is very athletic so I think it looks better? Tuki is an Impact prop with his style or when he starts he plays it safer from what I've noticed. Just because he got voted prop of the year at 22 in Cup doesn't mean there's still not issues in his game but there's a lot to work with and he's shown it at cup, He's still a prospect IMO.

I'd take a punt on Cooper myself but I 100% get Tuki being the one, He's closer to NRL in most ways and can come in with some work from Des make an impact compared to Cooper who's more of a project, It sucks noone has shown Cooper an offload/pass or anything moving up the ranks, He has everything you'd want in a modern prop I reckon.

A bit off topic but if you are bored and have a couple of hours to spend, there is a good documentary on the Penrith 3 peat on Youtube in a 3 part series called “Undisputed” with particular emphasis on the semi final series last year. Some good footage and insights on team meetings, pre and half time talks. Well worth a look
