2024 Squad, Signings and Rumours Thread

He wants a starting 13 role.
Brisbane forward Kobe Hetherington has five teams interested in his services after being given permission to negotiate with other clubs.
Wests Tigers, currently on a recruitment drive, are one of the Sydney outfits keen on the versatile 25-year-old who is seeking a club where he can start and play more minutes.
The son of former Queensland and Canterbury star Jason Hetherington is on contract with the Broncos until the end of 2025, but is set to leave a year early.
Hetherington's manager Chris Haddad said his client had no issue with the Broncos or coach Kevin Walters. His decision is purely a professional one.
Hetherington can play on the edge or as a middle but the Broncos have only been inclined to start him when one of their regular run-on players is injured or on representative duty.
He has played 77 games for Brisbane, but in 19 of his 22 matches this year he has come off the bench.
"The Broncos have given Kobe permission to talk to other clubs but they also want a suitable replacement for him," Haddad told AAP.
"Kobe is a starting player and he wants to start somewhere. He loves Kevvie as a coach and as a bloke and he loves the Broncos.
"The Broncos don't want to lose him and if they had a starting spot for him he would stay."
Broncos skipper Adam Reynolds refers to Hetherington as the side's "cattle dog."
"Kobe has got a bit of that fight and mongrel in him like a cattle dog and just keeps going," the captain once said.
Other clubs have also identified his workhorse mentality and knockabout Central Queensland ways.
"Kobe is an 80-minute player and potential Origin player," Haddad said.
"His character off the field is a reflection of his character on it."
Sounds like his agent wants to root him. Jeez talk it up mate. OK player but certainly nothing special.

In regards to Kobe, his form this year has been down. He is another small forward which is the last thing we need and is not that particularly quick for a small forward.

I don’t mind him. High effort, front loads his D, can play big minutes and has a bit of footwork. Had a down year but so did that entire team. Would cost less than most of the other middles that are available. Signing a guy like Royce Hunt for half a mil+ would’ve done my head in

But to WD’s point I’m not sure if he’s a fit for what we need at the moment if Randall is going to be a full time middle anyway. Happy to fence sit this one

I get the feeling there’s going to be some moving and shaking with a few rosters this off-season. Us included

I think I’m just slightly more curious about Pahulu moving to legit 13/Small forward duties next season than signing Kobe.. wouldn’t be mad about it though, dude is a competitor.

Now, if we could trade Keenan Palasia for him, I’d be waaay onboard lol.

…although, Palasia did give my avatar a mention when congratulating Hau on IG, so maybe he sticks around in my view and possibly retire his jersey?

The Gold Coast Titans have signed Palm Beach Currumbin SHS No.13 Isaac Harrison – the modern day king of grand finals.
Harrison joins his twin brother Zane at the Titans, bringing with him an extraordinary grand final record which sees him play his 15th club or school decider during Wednesday’s National Schoolboy Cup finale against Patrician Brothers Blacktown at CBUS Stadium, Gold Coast.

At first glance, does not appear an NRL potential player, But his determination, high work rate and extra effort performances demanded an NRL club make a move on him – and that club was the Titans.

Best confirmation we've signed Zane, Really like Issac as well and in the modern NRL he could be interesting but if he doesn't make it it won't be from lack of effort, Probably a T&T I would assume.

TWINS Basel.

Isaac Harrison certainly works his guts out, maybe if he can spend time working at dummy half he can work himself into a role like Max Plath has at the Dolphins.

Just to add - Isaac has always been a part of our junior system, which the article didn’t bother to mention, but like Cowa says this suggests he’s going to be involved with the nrl squad in some capacity.

It’s a good sign in terms of negotiations with Zane as well.

Will be curious to see how he goes in pre-season. He’s another stocky shorty but is all effort.

Have yapped on a fair bit over the last 2-3 years about the quality of this particular age group (now U18) and Isaac is another one from that bunch.

This group (in some capacity) has:
-Won the MM comp this year at Tweed (with most of them playing a year up)
-Won the Langer trophy twice in a row
-Beaten Penrith, Rabbitohs, and Newcastle in fixtures versus their SG ball sides in the last 12 months + beaten sides like the Roosters, Tigers and NZ invitational teams in previous years

We talk a lot about strong junior age groups and we’ve had some decent ones in SEQ but this one is probably the best in the past decade in terms of junior success. Please for the love of god don’t assume it will translate to NRL success or start coming @ me with our oVErHyPEd jUnIorS

Names from this year group include:
Zane Harrison
Ryder Williams
Sam Stephenson
Cooper Bai
Zac Kumbamong
Sunny Kama
Ray Puru
Corey Pearse
Isaac Harrison

+ more but I’ve tried to just include the ones who will be involved with the NRL squad in some capacity in the immediate future. All of these guys have been with the Titans since 15’s or at latest 17’s (Zac).

Was going to post this in the JTS thread but figured it’ll fit here seeing as its related to their NRL squad transition

What's the deal with Tim Maccan because the guy seems to really know what he's doing at PBC and Tweed MM and it's been consistent for a while now with constant changing of players but he keeps winning or being around the top. I don't know if he's more important for us doing what he's doing with those programs or what his aspirations are coaching wise but surely he should get a look at the Tweed Cup gig or come on board with us as an assistant. At the very least, Massive props to him.

Currently there is a big gap in the pathways after MM to NRL whereas the NSW clubs have the Jersey Flegg competition to fill this void.

Until the proposed National Under 21 competition gets going, if it ever does, there is a good opportunity for Tim Maccan to have some transitional development role for those players finishing MM and the good thing is that Tim already has a good knowledge and rapport with the majority of these players.

I honestly kind of hate the 21s idea but get it's a quick fix like Ikin mentioned the other week and easiest to do right now just adding the 4 QLD teams, IMO it's the worst age group.

All those kids named by HS, IMO barely any of them should or would spend a lot of time in 21s and would move into cup and it really doesn't actually help development that much IMO. Even now in NSW cup, Most teams are running out their best 18/19/20 year olds and don't really care to much about results. CUP is still way more important over a 21s for NRL development. It feels more important to have a good streamline at cup then 21s but you're right development wise I just don't know how long these kids actually sit in flegg beforshould be in cup, Maybe a season at most and then the transition really starts.

Burleigh and Tweed were a good example, Tweed had guys go through Flegg while Bears send them to A grade, I think Bears had a better rate of bringing our guys through.

The other interesting part from the Ikin interview was him talking about agents and kids at 15 having them and looking heavily into the money kids are being offered.

I'm with you Cow. I want to see how our young players go against men and I don't want to see another version of touch that the NYC dished up.

In terms of immediate recruitment fixes, I've had a proper look at who's off contract this year and next. Some of these guys might be worth talking to (I've excluded a few due to age etc. so it's not exhaustive):

Signable now (off contract 2024):
- Isaiah Tass
- Reimis Smith
- Matt Croker 191cm, 108kgs, 24 yrs
- Oregon Kaufusi 188cm, 114kg, 25
- Jack Williams 184cm, 98kg, 27

Off contract 2025 (possible starters next year on a 2+ year deal):
- Grant Anderson
- Adam Pompey
- Kobe Hetherington 95kg, 25
- Big Willison 22
- Teig Wilton 186cm, 98kg, 24
- Bullemor 190cm, 110kg, 24
- Tof Sipley 190cm, 120kg, 29
- Leo Thompson 186cm, 107kg, 24
- Griff Neame 193cm, 106kg, 23
- Tallis Duncan 186cm, 95kg, 22
- Alex Seyfarth 191cm, 104kg, 25

I've ignored halves, fullbacks, wingers and hookers, as I think we're ok there for now.

I don't know what shape Tass is in but him and Reimis would be a quick fix for centres next year. I'd settle for Reimis and be on the look out for another if Tass is no good. Croker and/or Kaufusi would be good additions too, but if we can get Leo Thompson or Sipley on a 2 year that'd be great too. I think Duncan might be too pricey but he's got a big future. Seyfarth might be good if he's cheap too. He can play middle or 2R. Wilton and Bullemor would sort out our 2R stocks and have our current guys competing harder than ever.

Whaddayouse reckon?

This is my concern
100% he should become a hooker with a bit of versatility like Plath or Randle.

Many of you don’t agree but I will be sad to see Tanah running out for another club. I remain convinced that he will be a quality first grader.
The thing a lot of people forget is that some players don't become anything meaningful untill sometimes 26-30 or even later. Absolutely nothing you can do about it either, sucks for teams that put in years to develop young guys, they turn to nothing the first couple years in FG, head over somewhere else on a minimum deal and end up finding a solid role and giving that team better value than their first. Tanah Boyd I think can sit on an NRL roster somewhere, okay third half option, probably a good backup to third hooker option too, those guys still have value and he's experienced. Wouldn't surprise me if went to like Manly or something and ended up having a couple good years as a 14.

To me he just always seemed way too deer-in-the-headlights.

Didn't realise Kaufusi was off-contract this year. He'd actually start next to Tino in the middle for me, and if we wanted to play bigger one of them could shift and play some 13 too, would be a pretty nice signing.
