Pleasing to see some former Titans and Gold Coast Juniors back. Also excited see young Zae Wallace getting an opportunity and still under 20 eligible.

Leary, massive pick up along side experienced Matt Robinson and former Titans NYC Francis Fifita, Josh Berkers and Jerome Veve. Some sound recruitment by the Bears. They should do well with the squad they have assembled and the players the Titans send back.

MDrew do you know much about Kaleb Fuimoano

Anyone know of Tweeds gains and losses?

Kaleb Fuimoano is an athletic young front rower mate originally from the Easts Tigers before heading up to North Queensland. May make an impact from the bench early for Burleigh.

Most of Tweed's new players are former Titans NYC mate such as Ethan Roberts etc, especially with Woolf taking over

Sunshine Coast finished runner-up last season after leading Papua New Guinea until the final minute of the Intrust Super Cup grand final.

Burleigh won the last 2 games these sides contested at Sunshine Coast Stadium in 2013 and 2014.

However Sunshine Coast has won 9 of their last 10 home games.

Falcons winger Matt Soper-Lawler scored 17 tries last season and played in the Cameron Smith-Johnathan Thurston testimonial game.

Burleigh finished ninth last season in an injury-hit campaign but have signed 52-game NRL player Blake Leary from the North Queensland Cowboys.

The Bears played well today winning 34-22 over the Sunny Coast & could give this competition a real shake this season

Late lapses leave Lenihan worried

LEADING the Intrust Super Cup ladder is not enough.

Long-time Burleigh coach Jimmy Lenihan has demanded his undefeated side be better switched on after halftime if they are to continue their strong start to the season.

The Bears cast aside rivals Tweed Heads 32-12 at the weekend but for the second time in three starts, let their opposition back into the contest with a lapse after the break.

For a period at Piggabeen Sports Complex, Tweed threatened to overrun the Bears before losing momentum. Lenihan’s side also nearly gave up a 24-0 lead in their seasonopener against Sunshine Coast.

Five of the eight tries they have conceded in 2018 have come between the 41st and 60th minutes.

“Maybe starting after halftime is something that we have to really try to get a little bit better,” Lenihan said.

“We seem to forgo an early try in the second half quite regularly.”

Burleigh Bears hit with injury and suspension concerns ahead of Central Queensland Capras game

BURLEIGH are bound for the first hurdle of what has been an unblemished start to their Intrust Super Cup season.

Jamal Fogarty is under an injury cloud after damaging his ankle during the Bears’ 40-28 win over Souths Logan on Saturday.

An initial scan has cleared the premiership-winning halfback of a break but the club are awaiting results of an MRI for further details.

The timing of Fogarty’s injury comes after former Panthers playmaker Harry Siejka headed back to Sydney, leaving fringe hooker Chris Law or rookie half Josh Rogers – himself racing the clock to recover from an ankle issue – as next in line.

Among those to fill in at No.6 or No.7 last year – Jacob Grant, Sam Grant (both Cudgen), Keanu Te Kiri (Tugun) and Daniel Schwass (refereeing) – have since departed.

In more bad news, Sami Sauiluma and Jamie Dowling were placed on report for shoulder charges.

Jai Whitbread will need to pass concussion tests to be passed fit to take on Central Queensland after being knocked out during the Magpies win.

Reinforcements are not far away though in the form of centre Justin Tavae and Titans prop Jack Stockwell, who are both on the comeback trail from injuries.

Gold Coast centre Brenko Lee made a positive return from a pre-season knee injury on Saturday.

Lee was shown up once by opposite centre Marion Seve but helped lay on two tries for his winger Tyronne Roberts-Davis.

The former Raider and Bulldog played left centre, shifting Sauiluma to the right wing.

Bears coach Jimmy Lenihan said Lee will be better for the run.

“I’m sure he’ll be ready to go if they (the Titans) need him on that left edge,” Lenihan said.

Bears win has a price

IT could be a painfully long trip home for classy Burleigh fullback Kurtis Rowe after his side’s victory in Gladstone yesterday.

The former Wests Tigers player suffered a suspected fractured eye socket late in the encounter at Marley Brown Oval which, if confirmed, will prevent him from flying home with the squad and instead force his mode of transport for the 600km trek to a hire car.

Despite the injury blow, the Bears knuckled down for a 28-20 win over a determined Central Queensland Capras outfit featuring ex-Maroons forward Dave Taylor and 2016 Bears premiership winner Connor Broadhurst.

Burleigh now hold a 5-0 record – the exact opposite of where they stood this time last year.

They did it the hard way though, falling behind after conceding 20 unanswered points either side of the halftime break.

“I’ve always said an ugly win is far better than a good looking loss,” said coach Jimmy Lenihan. “We probably scored real easy and found the lead a little bit too easy.

“Going into the back of the first half, we started seeing signs that we were losing touch with it a little bit and the start of the second half we didn’t really have much ball at all.”

But inspired by props Luke Page and Jack Stockwell, the Bears dug in and reclaimed the lead through tries to Pat Politoni and Tyronne Roberts-Davis.

Halfback Josh Rogers, called up to replace injured lead playmaker Jamal Fogarty, sealed the result with a late try.

“We certainly didn’t win pretty or do it overly convincingly but the fact that they fought through and found a way to win was really pleasing,” Lenihan said.

Fogarty is no certainty to return for the team’s Round 6 clash with Norths at Bishop Park on Saturday, with more to be known about his ankle complaint after a specialist appointment on Tuesday.

“The scans aren’t showing good signs for him but he’s not feeling bad,” Lenihan said.

“We have to get it checked out fully because the scans are saying that he’s ruptured a syndesmosis ligament but he is walking around and doing things that he shouldn’t be if it was fractured.”

The Devils, who beat Papua New Guinea 34-22 on Saturday, are Burleigh’s nearest challenger at the top of the Intrust Super Cup ladder.

Bears hold on against Capras
https://www.qrl.com.au

The top-of-the-table Burleigh Bears survived an almighty scare from the CQ Capras, earning themselves a 28-20 win in front of a healthy crowd at Marley Brown Oval, Gladstone.

Played at the early time of 11.45am as a curtain-raiser to the NRL match between the Gold Coast Titans and Manly; the home crowd may have been disappointed with the final result – but were surely entertained by the high-scoring match.

They can also be proud of their CQ team, who pushed the Bears all the way and even lead in stages of a great match to watch.

As is often the case, it was a penalty that helped start the scoring after a solid start from both side, with hands in n the ball helping the Bears go deep into Capras territory. Once there, Kurtis Rowe made the most of the invitation, and crossed in left-hand side to open the scoring.

The Bears then enjoyed the majority of the possession for the next stages of play, including a line dropout, with Dave Taylor taking the kick for the Capras.

The home side then gave up another penalty; forcing themselves to defend another set of six – but it proved too much when Dallas Wells showed some footwork at the line before reaching out by the right-hand uprights in the 16th minute.

The Capras continued to shoot themselves in the foot with errors when they did finally did get the ball and they continued to invite the Bears to score by giving away penalties.

After gamely defending their own line for repeat sets (including hold up Luke Page who hit and spun his way over); they finally cracked again when hooker Pat Politoni worked the ball left for his side to continue the movement and put Tyronne Roberts-Davis over in the far left corner for a 12-0 lead.

The Capras worked hard to change the momentum and got a penalty off the back of a good kick-return from Junior Kirisome.

While nothing came from that play, they eventually worked their way into the game when five-eighth Blake Goodman scored in the 33rd minute after showing good awareness to take a quite tap with the Bears retreating with the backs turned.

Despite some attention, he was able to get the ball down on the line. However, the conversion from Connor Broadhurst hit the uprights, but local fans were still breathing easier to only be trailing 12-4.

They went back-to-back just before the break following another enthusiastic effort from Kirisome who put in a good chase and was able to bat the ball back before the team swung the ball to the vacant right-hand side for Chanel Seigafo to go over.

The difficult kick for Connor Broadhurst from the eastern touchline was unsuccessful, leaving the halftime score 12-8 to the Bears, with all five conversion attempts from both teams unsuccessful.

The Capras continued their charge in the second half and were the first to score, with Jamie Hill finding that he had been put onside after a kick ahead was touched by the defending Bears.

This time, Broadhurst was able to score against his old team, raising the flags for a conversion for the first time today, earning a Capras lead.

The home side had started to dominate Burleigh and were in again only four minutes later when Dave Cowhan touched the ball down after going for a strong run.

Broadhurst had no trouble again, almost from the same spot to extend it to a 20-12 lead with 10 minutes gone in second half.

With the sniff of an upset in the air; Burleigh lifted and it was reliable performer Politoni who lead the charge, going in under the posts after some strong runs from Josh Rogers and Page had set the platform.

Rogers was able to kick the day’s first successful conversion for the Bears and his side were trailing 20-18.

The momentum had swung and luck was going their way, and despite some messy play in the lead-up – the Bears were able to evade some scrambling defence; allowing Roberts-Davis to go over in the right-hand side to retake the lead 22-20.

This time, the conversion hit the left upright – and with just under 10 to go; it was still anyone’s game.

The Capras continued to show solid goal-line defence – but with three minutes left of the clock; the Bears were able to seal the win when a kick ahead from Rogers hit the legs Capras defenders to give him a perfect rebound back into his arms, before running in under the posts to score.

Next week, the Bears will travel to Bishop Park to play the Devils, while the Capras will face off against Souths at Davies Park.
