Round 12: BRONCOS vs TITANS (2022)

Remind me how old Ezra Man is and Nanai. . Both 19 year olds. If your good enough you are old enough

Not comparable, for a number of reasons.

I’d suggest you do some research into the pathway of both Ezra and Jeremiah, then compare it to Jojo. Then also look at Jojo’s injury history.

Then there’s the fact that throwing a kid in at a time like this would just slaughter their confidence.

Have you watched Jojo play this year? Highlights don’t count

We are basically F@cked so many things wrong just don't have the time to mention.
I'll just say Tino is not a captain and this sums up Hurricane's downfall and Meninga is the town idiot who should fall on his sword

What's going on with our pathways? Where is all this young talent supposedly coming up through our lower grades? JC, Brimson, Sexton...then who? The rest of our side is just players we've poached from other clubs.

This team has the destiny for the wooden spoon.

Like a person in remission from a bad habit, they have the ability to repeat their failures in unexpected ways. They lift their loved ones up promising they will change but just as the loved ones regain trust they manage to let them down again. Up on the score board and having survived a double send off, even the hardest cynic starts to trust again. Then the let down again.......heart break, the soul searching whether to give up on them, the pain of disappointment.
But they are family...intertwined in the loved ones life perhaps like a bad habit itself....So what can change when the addict finds new and creative ways to self destruct and disappoint.

Tino is a person of real character. These days no one wants to take responsibility, he does.
One of the differences for the Broncos this year is Reynolds. He wasn't on the field tonight but his influence has bestowed belief and confidence in the team. We are rock bottom in that department.

Not the first time you talked about Tino. IMO he is a good leader, takes responsibility and leads from the front. It’s the other players that need to follow.

All titans fans should watch the press conference and you will see what a player and person our captain is

Well said

I mean, 3/4 of our spine is pathway produced which is pretty bloody good if you compare it to across the league. Add BK, Sami and Fotuaika and that’s 6 starters who are all from the Titans junior system. Then throw Marzhew on top, as well as Lofi, Jojo, Tom Weaver and Tony Francis in the wider squad.

Did you watch the trial v the Broncos? That was full of pathways players. To even have that many to throw into an NRL trial is telling. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg really. Each year you’ll see a few more be pushed up and that will compound to a higher % of the Top 30 and Dev spots being pathway players, but that takes time. Realistically and for some perspective - a club would be happy with 1 single NRL player developed from each age group. If you get more than that, fantastic.

Can always give mdrew’s threads a read - he’s been documenting pathways for years.

Would there be interest in me making a pathways/transitional thread here to connect mdrew’s junior commentary to the NRL level? I could cover JTS pathway players nearing top squad at older age groups (18-21), share some details about how close they are to top squad and what needs to happen for them to be in the frame for NRL. I’m sure mdrew would be happy to share some insights too (hopefully :))

I was referring to no player in particular but the fact that when a clubs season has ended, you look for the future and start fast tracking the development of your potential future NRL players. We keep playing bludgers like Lisone who has done nothing this year to deserve being continually picked.

On another note, I wonder whether part of the teams problems is fitness or lack thereof. I know that the Broncos sacked their fitness coach last year and their new fitness coach just flogged them during the oreseason and they seem so much fitter this year going the 80. You also listen to Payton who said he did a lot of preseason fitness work on things the players hated to make them mentally tougher.

There is more to our side losing big leads at half time than just lack of leadership and coaching which are also contributing factors but there are wider issues at play as well.

Still can't believe the short kick off attempt at 24-10. We love to take a short cut don't we? Hard work is not in our DNA as a club.

i feel like "sacking the coach" is the easy option. especially only what 3 years in? like i said last night we've had other coaches that werent any more successful than the one we have now. and if we were to sack holbrook, who is there to bring in. truth is we do have a young team, young spine, young everything, we were always going to lose more games than we win. im as frustrated as anyone, especially about last nights performance

Don't get me wrong Tino tries his guts out and a champion of a bloke but if your captain doesn't communicate the challenges and tactics effectively then success will be unattainable. Yes, fire in the belly but ice in the brain as they say.

Also I expect our captain to perform in the clutch moments and lead the team to victory,

I love Tino he's the only one that shows any accountability but I worry were gonna overworked him and he's gonna end up like Ryan hames

Those 13 minutes of covering the two sin bins took a lot of petrol both physically and mentally. Sexton’s absence compounded that while the Broncos players pound for pound were better than ours. Our fullback not only got manhandled again but made dumb choices. Our two wings were horrible with the ball. Compared to Oates and Cobbo, Thompson just doesn’t offer anything and Isaako has too many errors in his game. Clarke is possibly a 13 but not a 9. I’m disappointed but not broken by the collapse. As far as Holbrook is concerned, is he accountable for the first or second half? Last year Kevvie and Payton couldn’t take a trick this year they’re master coaches. I’m impatiently patient on this. Very pleased to see Sexton, Brimson, Fifita and AJ do something.

My beef of the week is the tv commentary which just made watching unbearable.

Ryan James was either a penalty magnet or an injury liability. Good bloke but how quickly we forget. Tino so far is miles in front.

I don't understand the "No leadership" thing. I think Tino is an amazing captain. He leads by example, he is well spoken and he is accountable. His performance last night was so noteworthy that it will live in our active memory and really deserved to be part of a better story.

If people mean more leadership from players, communication, organisation, experience, giving people major revs. But when I see "leadership" I think that it reads as unfair to Tino.

I think we really missed Sami and Marzhew. Surely Greg has earned a spot next week.

I tried to cheer myself up last night eating a chocolate Cornetto and just thinking of Tino and Sexton. I think Sexton will continue to gain in confidence. And while we lost the game that will stick with us.

Good point.

'Might not be in Origin camp': Tino devastated after Titans collapse
https://www.nrl.com/news/2022/05/28/might-not-be-in-tino-devastated-after-titans-collapse/

Shattered Gold Coast captain Tino Fa’asuamaleaui believes he does not deserve a State of Origin call-up after he took the blame for the Titans’ remarkable collapse in the 35-24 loss to Brisbane on Friday.

The relentless Fa’asuamaleaui finished the night with 271 running metres, 129 post-contact running metres and 31 tackles after amassing 203 running metres, 93 post-contact metres and 16 tackles in the first half when the Gold Coast held a commanding 24-4 advantage.

However, it was his decision for Jamayne Isaako to attempt a short kick-off with the Titans leading 24-10 in the 57th minute which led to a runaway try to Brisbane’s Jordan Riki as the Broncos piled on 31 unanswered point in the second half.

Despite his vivid disappointment with the result at Suncorp Stadium that condemned the Titans to a 3-9 record, Fa’asuamaleaui will likely be one of the first forwards picked when the Maroons brains-trust meet this weekend to select their team for the series opener in Sydney on June 8.

But there was no consoling the giant lock who believes he owes Queensland after rating his 2021 series as “disappointing”.

“Honestly, I don’t think I’ll be in Origin camp the way I played then. The second half, there were a lot of things where I let the boys down and it’s something that Billy and the coaching staff and the selectors will be looking at,’’ he said.

“The way I performed then and the last couple of weeks haven’t been up to scratch and I’ll honestly be surprised if I’m in camp.

“I really want to get that Maroons jersey because I feel like I owe Queensland. I didn’t play good last series and I let the state down. I’m hoping I’m in the mix to get picked and make sure I do a job for Queensland.

“He (Maroons coach Billy Slater) is one of the best and that’s the reason I want to make Queensland because Billy is a part of it. I was down at the Storm with him and every time we trained, I looked up to him so much.’’

Fa’asuamaleaui took full responsibility for the botched short kick-off from Isaako that savagely swung the momentum in favour of the Broncos who rattled off five tries in a 21-minute period after halftime.

“That’s mine. I stuffed up. Jamayne wanted to go long and I thought it was an opportunity to go short, didn’t understand the rule of going over the 10 (metre line) and when to grab it and missed the tackle so I put my hand up for that,’’ he said.

“It’s not good leadership from myself. It’s easy, it’s a short cut. That’s why it hurts, I let the boys down. I won’t do that again, I need to be better.’’

Gold Coast coach Justin Holbrook said the Titans were in “complete control” at 18-0 but “we just completely lost our way” with “reckless” and “just dumb” football.

“We found a way to throw it away... we deserve to feel like this. He (Tino) was enormous, he doesn’t come off the whole first half," Holbrook said.

"I’m not here blaming Tino."

He will be first picked. As for leadership, he’s a middle forward not a half and his job is to take the team forward, which he is doing nearly single handedly. Off the field his behavior is exemplary too. He is leadership personified and expectations for him to be the game manager are well out of line with reality. The short kick off was an anomaly.

Who expects him to be game manager T?
