Round 21: DOLPHINS vs TITANS (2024)

Special LoT mentions:

Good on you Diehard for being there for that one. Wish we could have been there to shower you in beer. You deserved that win as much as anyone.

NZT - very bloody funny today mate. You're on fire. Is your image you rubbing the lotion into your hands?

HS - for giving us the heads up about the tweed game on Kayo. I had a great afternoon of three games back to back and CG looked good.

Cow - like your new look.

It's a great forum. Lots of good analysis and comment from everyone on here.

Fermor seems like a willing lad and good team man. Do you rate him against others who play a similar role eg our own Haas or Matterson, Papaalii, Nanai, Katoa, etc? He’s not a complete dill but he’s not top notch either and seems way too comfortable.

@MT for what it’s worth, I agree with all of that … Jojo swap with Sami, even get rid of him for Francis. Sami’s advantage is he’s NRL tough however somebody needs to wipe that stupid smirk off his face, preferably in QCup. I’d like Clark as our 13 next year and play him like Radley. Tino and JJ to start with Mo for impact.

Worthy of mention is Foz’ field goal. I’ve seen grown men pee higher and longer than that but none so effective … loved it.

Against all the guys you named T..... Matterson is punch drunk and way off the pace, Pap Tigers let him go, Nanai????? He can't defend at all, Katoa is a gun but gets caught out to occasionaly. Haas looks like they want to make him a middle? I'd play him edge but Fermor isn't leaking at all like he was.. I don't love Fermor but yes I rate him over a fair few who you named tbh.... Matterson??? Cmon T, Have you watched any of him this year??? I actually would take Fermor over Nanai at club level, Nanai is a horrible defender and imo with Fermor.... Nanai is shocking... He can't defend?

Yes Fermor might be better then most the guys you mentioned....Nanai is a horrible defender which is the whole blow up about Fifita and everyone... You can't talk about standards while carrying Nanai who is horrible defensively and getting caught out more. I can't stand Fermor half the time but he hasn't been bad lately... In fact he's been good imo. He's defending better and making me way less pissed at him. Sami was the issue today clearly it seemed defensively but then he did the spin and got us the try basically. The kick wasn't meant for Foz either and he made the quick decision to do it.

Nanai is the worst defender in the league on stats.

I've strongly disliked the Dolphins since they put the "welcome to Phinland" ad up on the bigscreen outside of Westfield Coomera in their debut year. The arrogance irked me.

Good to knock them down a peg or two

Campbell credits Hasler's half-time spray for titanic turnaround

A “warranted” classic half-time spray from Des Hasler helped the Titans claim a fightback win against the Dolphins, with Jayden Campbell saying his coach’s belief inspired the epic turnaround.

Trailing 14-6 at the break, the Titans scored three second-half tries, along with a Kieran Foran field goal, to post the 21-14 victory.

The win keeps the Gold Coast’s faint finals hopes flickering, with Campbell saying Hasler’s fiery address was exactly what the team needed to get their focus right.

“We started off really slow; we were pretty poor, myself included, in the first half defensively and just our intent really,” Campbell told NRL.com.

“We came in at half-time and we copped a bit of a mouthful from Des; it was warranted and we needed it.

“But Des, he's got so much belief in us as a team and makes us believe in ourselves and we just want to win it for us, but also for him as well.

“I think it was just our attitude towards the game … we just sort of came in thinking it would happen but really, we have got to work for it.

“I am really, really proud of the boys and how we responded after half-time and how we dug deep.”

Campbell – who has this season moved from fullback to five-eighth – missed two weeks with a broken hand, but hasn’t skipped a beat since his comeback and was on song again, playing a leading role in three of his side’s four tries.

He however was full of praise for his teammates and their efforts in securing the win, with Origin prop Moeaki Fotuaika leading from the front and young fullback Keano Kini continuing to impress.

“Moe's awesome for us, he's a real leader in our pack, but I thought Keano Kini today for us was massive; young kid coming in and pretty much put us on his back in the first half,” Campbell said.

“K gets through a lot of work and he's such a good player, I'm happy for him, he works really hard on his game, so really proud of him.”

While the belief remains strong within the squad, the Titans need to win their remaining games to stay a chance of an unlikely finals appearance.

Not wanting to look too far ahead, Campbell said his focus was firmly on hosting their next-up opponents the Broncos on Saturday, who like their fellow Queensland rivals the Dolphins, have been struggling for wins, but also still have a goal of post-season football.

“It’s a local rivalry and it’s always a good game, but we have just got to keep winning,” Campbell said.

“You have got to take it week by week. The only thing that we can really do is just keep winning.

“We have got the next two games at home, so it's going to be a big help.

“It helps with our preparation too, not having to travel and staying local around family and friends, so it's really big for us these next two games and hopefully we can come away with a win for both weeks.”

Tino spoke so highly of Kini in the podcast and his work ethic and also the way des really instills belief in the squad. Said he pushes Kini more then anyone and it's showing he is a mini Roger tuivasa check/Ben barba I

The Ref gave a fair few ruck infringements early in the game which gave Redcliffe an easy out of their end (when they were going nowhere) and handed them so much possession where I think we only had like 30% of the ball. I'm seeing this more and more in games where the Ref can basically gas a team out of the contest which is where I think our first half was hijacked.
To me the Ref was blatant against us until Foran had enough and basically called him a cheat when he got marched...that alone changed the momentum of the game and the Ref actually started levelling things up (a nice piece of captaincy IMO).

That’s why I don’t like the 6 again rule. The ref dictates the state of the game. If the game was played in India or Pakistan can you imagine how many bookies would approach the ref. Wouldn’t happen here though.

Tino said Kini has the best work ethic and desire to improve out of any player hes seen in his career so far, pretty amazing when you think of the calibre of players Tino’s played with. So good to hear that a guy with Keano’s natural talent has that drive as well.

Particularly nice as other players in Campbell's position might perceive Kini as a threat. Great team-first attitude.
This is where it becomes difficult on the fans because of the immense value to the team of dynamics while we can only judge performances. Perhaps AKP is the greatest bloke and Liu the Godfather.
