Round 22: TITANS vs BRONCOS (2024)

There is no team in world sport that I despise more than the Murdoch Drongoes
Been reading Steve Macord’s Two Tribes book on 1997 and the Super League war. My hatred is renewed. I used to be a Broncos fan. And it took a lot to step back and become a fan of no club just the game. And I had to wait about 5-6 years until the Titans came in. Thank god.

For me it started with the demise of the BRL and usurping of Wests Panthers territory by the Show Ponies (herein the ‘Ponies). Their incredibly shameless marketing with full support by the News Ltd Courier Mail left no room for the roots of the sport that gave them their monopoly. It’s taken nearer to half a century to break that monopoly with the Porpoises.

Then unbelievably Wests Panthers very own John Ribot de Brittlesack (sic) together with the now seemingly untouchable, opinionated, family-breaking, skeletal coach leading the charge using left-wing ideology (doing it for the common good) to cloud their very right-wing, commercial, pocket-lining agendas (see end of this) on behalf of that bastion of rapaciousness: the Murdoch Gang aka News Limited.

Some will argue, and with good reason, that the ARL had a lot of issues. Yes they did, yet here we are nearly thirty years later back to where we were in 1995. So what? Many will argue, including me, that the game has thrived since that divisive period but has it been due to Stupid League?

Yes and no. Higher salaries and greater transparency is the “for” lobby’s argument. However, as everyone in League Central in 1995 knew those changes were inevitable and already publicly planned.

What should never be forgotten is that SL was designed, not as the savior of grassroots football or even the elite players getting their just desserts, it was about News Ltd OWNING the elite competition for their pure commercial gain.

No interest in the game, zero transparency from a privately owned conglomerate, an immediate sacking of nearly half the elite player base (20 teams to 12) and the eventual destruction by strangulation of the fabric of our sport.
