Round 4: TITANS vs TIGERS (2022)

I just don’t understand how they can play attacking footy like the first half against the Eels and Raiders, but then take 79 minutes to score a fluke try against the Tigers of all teams. Looked so disjointed out there

5 day turnaround, new fullback, disrupted week with COVID and flooding of the training fields, several new combinations with Fifita and Marzhew swapping sides.

All valid points but unfortunately the rest of the league community/media won’t think about that and instead everyone just thinks how awful we are. Also I get why Marzhew went to the left so he can come straight out for Sami, but I thought the Fifita swap was a bit strange. Obviously the idea was to get him better ball but they’re just disjointing everything when you have to move him back to the right next week.

Who cares what others think?

Agree re: Fifita swap. We had enough disruptions without swapping him too.

Four games so far this year and we have gotten worse each week.
Wallace was an improvement and should come back into the 17.
We have never been good on 5 day turnarounds.
Very little confidence moving forward.

That’s a chilling observation.

There is so much wrong and in disarray that I struggle to make some summary observations.

But according to the erratic Titans social media team, it seems like we won the grand final in a style similar to the Knights in 1998. Or we got the “Job done.” If the job was humiliating our home fans and scarring any TV viewers. Yea. Job done.

Come on. Read the room. Watch the game.

TWO FRIGGIN’ POINTS lads … yes we looked out of sorts and yes there were a lot of disruptions and a couple of underwhelming efforts but WE GOT THE POINTS.

Wallace for Lisone, Fermor for Proctor, Sami for Thompson and put the right edge back to the right. To be honest I prefer Fifita on the left and I offer Fermor at left centre. I’ve never been an Isaako fan but he offers a lot more than any other option at 1 including JC at the moment.

We so badly need a 9 but all in all we got the points in the ugliest game ever and I’m happy about that.

Observation: if we had Peachey we lose.

I feel a touch better after watching the tragic and pained suffering of all the Tigers supporters on my fb friends list. Ouch. I do hope they sort themselves out one day.

Justin “couldn’t be happier or prouder of the boys tonight”

And fair enough, was awful prep losing 2 to covid early and 1 more the day before the game. Edges reshuffled. A fullback with 4 training sessions. Having to train at Tugun which even by GCRL standards is rough. Obviously we're a mile off but the playing group needs confidence after the Raiders loss and hes trying to give them that

My moring after takeaways:

-Still the worst quality game of Rugby League i've probably ever seen, Tigers have a knack of doing that to teams (see v Melbourne R1, v Warriors R3)

-Attack was clearly rough with changes & poor prep buuut we've proven this year we can score points so I'm not really concerened about that

-Probably don't need to touch on our general defensive issues but we can't ignore the fact we kept them tryless...for all the bad our scramble and goal line defence has been ok

-Sexton really struggled on both sides of the ball. Pretty steep learning curve for him at the moment

-Fifita I prefer on the right because he carries with his right, and Fermor on the left because he carries with his left, although defensively swapping them might have some merit

-Wallace was great. Agree with the comments on Lisone and I think Willhelm summarised his impact well and when it does/doesn't work

-CT looked way out of sorts as to be expected but I'm not sure he gets a gig next week. Tough call.

-I actually was impressed with Isaako all things considered. He needs to probably chill on the 5th tackle ball hog stuff but I think the way we attack will suit him. Saved a try that JC wouldn't have. Will get better and more in tune with time (only to leave at the end of the season)

Bad prep. Shuffled team. Ugly game against a desperate team. Depressing match thread (can someone please check on Birdman). But we got the 2.

Sami masterclass encore needed against Parra next week

Looking at it in the cold light of day is despite the performance it’s 2 points. As I said last year If we want to be top 8 we need to win the games we should (it’s why last week was nearly as frustrating as the bunnies game last year) and try and split the wins/losses with the top teams. It’s only early days and combinations will improve but I can say the following

-I did like Issakos willingness to hook in but I he was very hit and miss. 30 grubbers into the legs of opponents, sideways running and felt out of sync. However it’s his first game and I am happy to persist for a few more rounds but maybe switch him and a Thompson

- it’s been said to death but WTF is our defence I know we didn’t leak any tries last night but teams just steam roll 10+m a hit up. It’s obviously a plan but a poor one.

-AJ/Sexton combo still finding its feet but sextons kick game was poor last night.

-Fifita is still underwhelming. They are just loading 5,6 players but again no Fermor.

-Clark needs to play 80 if he can. Smith does nothing for me.

-I’ve seen enough or Proctor. JWall was the only player looking to offload

-we had a lot out but our bench rotation isn’t packing the punch it once did

-I think we need to tweak the team in a few areas. It will be interesting to see once Sami is fit bit to me Herbert is currently the odd one out.

Again the above is all stuff we know but to me our defence is going to be the difference between a 8 spot and a spoon battle and I have zero confidence in our defence

Forgot to add but 5YC your Herbert mention reminded me...I actually think BK is looking less and less like a first grader. He's always struggled defensively but he's not bringing much on the other side of the ball a the moment either. IMO Herbert is more valuable based on current form

My takeaways.

.The team looked lethargic and unenthusastic
.Our defence did not leak points as the Tigers attack was very predictable. Better attacking teams would have scored points.
.Our defence will be the downfall of this team as we have an outdated defensive system.
.Proctor made 4 runs for 28 meters. He should be in Qcup
.I have said before that Lisone is a liability after 5 minutes and does not have the aerobic capacity to be a useful player in the NRL.
.Issako was actually not to be bad and made 195 meters and saved a likely try. Needs to set up more support for his players rather than going it alone.
.Wallace was good and should replace Lisone with Ese on standby.
. Not sure what the issue is with Fifita but he is not the player he was last year. Seems uninterested unless the play is 10 meters out. His chase on the kicks is a classic case of lack of effort.
. Smith is not the answer as a utility and butchers more clutch plays than most players. He was the same at the Eels.
. It is a worry that the team seems to have gone backwards since the beginning of the year and will need to reverse it starting with the Eels next game who have improved markedly since Rd 1.

Australia in disbelief after watching worst game of footy ever

Contrary to popular belief, the Tigers and Titans both won on Thursday night — the crown for the worst NRL game ever played.

Wests Tigers fans probably won’t be able to read this because they’re still curled up on the floor in the foetal position but if you didn’t catch Thursday night’s NRL game, you should count yourself lucky.

Gold Coast beat the Tigers 8-6 in an absolute bludger to ensure the joint-venture club is still the only winless team in the competition across the opening four rounds.

After three penalty goals in the match Michael Maguire’s men were up 4-2 and we were looking at a try-less game until the final seconds when the Tigers butchered a play so badly, and so comically, you can only assume they’re allergic to victory.

A Titans kick hit the upright, deflected into the in-goal and into the arms of a Tigers player, who lost the Steeden when he was tackled. The ball spilled out and a Titans star reached out to ground it, completing the miracle comeback at the death.

Fans everywhere agreed the standard between both sides was so poor it would have constituted torture to tape someone’s eyes open and force them to watch all 80 minutes. But rugby league lovers — and especially Tigers supporters — are a glutton for punishment, so some decided to sit in front of the TV all of their own free will.

Here’s what everyone was saying about the worst professional footy some have ever seen.

Yep spot on. Z grade standard.

If we ever reintroduce capital punishment .. this would be a significant penalty making someone watch this

I’d like to personally congratulate Wests Tigers v North Queensland from Rd 11, 2015 at Campbelltown for no longer being the worst NRL game this century. #NRLTitansTigers

haha classified as the worst game ever

Best 1.5 minutes I’ve seen this year. Way better than any of the 1 pointers and golden point stuff. Houdini? We-dini… lol all the way to the points bank. Losers can please themselves … just think back to your feelings while watching the slow-mo bunker view replay as it inched towards awarding the original “no try” … you’ve got to love rugby league.

I 100% agree with 5YC.

Sezer brings up some great points too but I probably try to find a way to keep CT in the team. Not his best game but coming back from injury. We need his maturity and effort plays.

All I know is we need to stop giving up 50-60 metres every defensive set to the opposition immediately.

The good news is the blood pressure and heart rate are back down to normal!

You’re probably right re CT mate and I do think he’s the best option but am just a little worried his hand isn’t 100% right to go and he played out of necessity more than anything last night

Good news on the heart rate & blood pressure :)
