LEAGUEABILITY

Established in 2018, the Titans Physical Disability Rugby League (PDRL) team grants the opportunity for people with a physical disability to play the game of Rugby League.

LEAGUEABILTY is an adaptive game of rugby league that has been designed to allow people of all abilities to play, volunteer and coach. The programs platform allows us to foster a community that promotes genuine engagement, opportunities and inclusivity while raising community awareness and their value of inclusive actions in sport.

After the inaugural season in 2018, the Leagueability program has become the first Disability Rugby League Program in Australia to provide a competition for both men and women. The program has grown into three teams – Physical Disability, Intellectual Disability and All Abilities.

There has been significant growth in the program since its inception. Each player that has pulled on a Gold Coast Titans jersey has been welcomed into the Club and its legacy.

This is a weekly program where players learn the skills and fundamentals of rugby league. The program works on coordination and teamwork in a fun and supportive environment. Players are given the chance to play games across the Gold Coast and Northern Rivers, including matches at Cbus Super Stadium.

Titans throw support behind Leagueabilty legend

After volunteering her time to help others in our Leagueability program, now the Titans family is rallying around Polly Thornton.

The Titans Leagueability program is about more than just sport.

Ask Polly Thornton.

Polly works for the NRL on the Gold Coast, but is also a Leagueability Coach and has been involved in the program for the last two years.

"I've always had a passion for working with children with disabilities and that's what drew me to the Leagueability program here at the Titans," she said.

"Being a part of this amazing team and making sure everyone feels included in sport has always felt like my calling.

"It's hard to put into words what Leagueability means to me because it means a lot more than people would know.

"It gives me a purpose and it's always something I'm looking forward to each week."

Giving up her time to help others in the program, now it's about those connected to the Titans family helping Polly in her moment of need.

Polly is battling breast cancer and even when she's unwell from treatment, still never misses a Leagueability session.

"I think some people don't realise how hard a cancer journey really is and for someone that just looks like your average day-to-day person on the outside but is actually fighting stage 4 cancer," she said.

"Having that support, or simply having someone ask, 'Are you okay?' means the world to me."

Former Titan Clinton Toopi knows how important people like Polly are to the success of rugby league clubs.

Hearing her story and having seen her involvement in the game, the 156-game NRL veteran was keen to play his part - shaving his head as part of a fundraising campaign that raised over $5000 to help with treatment costs.

"Cancer is scary just thinking about... let alone knowing someone impacted by it or have been taken from us," Toopi said.

"It’s a daunting conversation that’s popped up in our office chats and I’ve had a little scare I've been through recently, but it's nothing in comparison to what Polly has had to endure.

"I feel how much it’s weighed on her, the impact it has on her emotionally and the trauma it causes.

"This makes me feel compelled to show a small ounce of support to a woman, mother, wife, friend, daughter, aunty and colleague I know is strong, upbeat and has a smile and energy that lifts our office."

Polly says she's forever grateful for what Toopi was able to do.

"To be honest, I never actually wanted a GoFundMe but that act of selflessness helped me pay for all of my treatment and book a much needed family holiday, so I'm extremely grateful," she said.

"Just to have that support from Toopi, my family and the amazing rugby league community has made such a huge impact in my journey."
