Affiliate wrap: Fantastic Francis helps Tweed raise bat against defending premiers

A quick-fire second half double to Titans flyer Tony Francis helped Tweed to a dominant 50-12 thrashing of the Brisbane Tigers at Piggabeen Sports Complex on Saturday night.

Joining fellow winger Brayden McGrady in amassing an incredible seven-try haul between the duo, Francis' four-pointers in the 40th and 60th minutes was part of a big night out for the pending NRL debutant; also making 222 running metres, three line breaks, five tackle busts and three offloads in the solid showing.

In what was the Seagulls' third win of the season and bringing them into the top eight for the first time in 2024, the half-century performance was also aided by Gold Coasters Keano Kini, Tom Weaver, Oskar Bryant, Jacob Alick-Wiencke and Iszac Fa'asuamaleaui who also played their part throughout the Round 7 contest.

They'll next host Wynnum Manly in the 'flockbuster' at Piggabeen on Sunday.

The Jets enjoyed the week off with the bye, next to face the Northern Pride also on Sunday afternoon at North Ipswich Reserve.

Soooo the whole reserve grade/affiliate thing. The NSW cup allows NRL teams to field a team but the QRL doesn't. We are in a unique position I feel with Tweed. Could Tweed defect to the NSWRL and we send most of our players there?
I don't know the full details and I am sure many will shout me down but I see an opportunity to develop our own reserve grade team here.

Agreed Ozy

This affiliate thing is not doing our club any favors. The Jets are sitting last with only 1 win for the season and got smashed by Wynnum yesterday when we had 6 contracted players playing to Wynnum's 3. I would suggest that the arrangement is not working due to a number of factors including:
. Contracted players are disinterested in playing for them as distance is a factor
. I would suggest that there is only 1 training session per week at most involving the contracted players resulting in lack of team cohesion and inhibiting the building of team and club morale.
. The contracted players are not as good as people believe.

A team and players gets better when they train and play together consistently in a good competition.

I dont see how the current arrangement is helping the club, the players and is likely being a detriment to the players development.

If the QRL are not accepting of the clubs desire to field a reserve grade team which is their perogitive, I would suggest that the club explore opportunities with the NSWRL to field a reserve grade team in the NSWRL either through Tweed which is in NSW anyway, or as a standalone and I am sure they would be more than welcoming of this initiative. Openly exploring the option may force the QRL hand.

The NSWRL reserve grade competition however is of a far higher quality than the QRL which would only enhance the development of the club and our players as well as building more synergy between the top 17 and the other 13 players.

Haha then through a hospital ball, Still impressed with him.

Tweed though are so bad, I've been more impressed with Jets lately with the new coach....Also kind of concerning that Iszac is the last forward on the bench in cup, What the hell has happened? He looks unfit compared to the start of the year or maybe it's the angle.

Edit: It's like watching us but dumber and way less quality.

Iszac has fallen off big time. Not sure exactly why. He’s just not playing good footy at the moment.

CG’s defensive contact is what impresses me most. A lot of the other stuff he can be coached.

Genuinely this feels like watching Brian Kelly and Phil Sami brain fades on every set

At this point I trust Jets to do a better job with our rookies considering their coach is the MM one who was pretty successful and from what I can tell the guys from the squad going up there actually really enjoy their time there, Schoupp comments on their wins still. This team... Is dog shit.

LOLLLL even the left centre just gave away a marker penalty, This is to good.

CG caught out twice now on Tweeds line.

Yeah I think Ippy are a better spot than Tweed right now. But I don’t think either are a great environment for developing young players. The sooner we can get our own team the better.

I must’ve missed the first time but saw him tackle around the ankles and a guy fall over lol a leaf out of the RU book. Just got his shoulder height wrong. Then he’s doing hot things like hitting props around the ball and carrying them back in yardage. He’ll learn

Be nice if they moved to the right post and fed the left edge from a quick ptb.

Watching CG off the ball it’ll say a lot about his understanding of his role

Vunas was with ya waving his arms for the ball out that way multiple times hahaha.

I can see it with CG due to what you said about physicality but also the off ball stuff I thought was good, He looked lined up basically every time but they went to Steadman. I didn't expect but he really looks for contact which stupidly from me is a union trait. For someone who's never played league really, He's looked as natural playing both positions already which to me is proof this dude will be fine.

It's a simple thing but even that run that he didn't play the ball right was an awesome sign, He saw he didn't have anyone to go to and ran as hard as he could and broke the line to get a quick ptb but messed up...I was COMPLETELY skeptical to where I nearly want to apoligize hahahah, The physicality on both sides of the ball is what's surprised me the most in his runs, Even in that game, It took 4 guys to take him down when he went himself finally getting the ball....

I know Tweed have to help themselves as well but maybe give it to the ex Wallabie who's looked dangerous with the ball most times and not Steadman constantly.... Although it was a puff piece I had to laugh at Penna taking any credit for Foz's career by moving him out of the centres into 5/8th..... GENIUS.

Surely Penna has to go from seagulls they have been very ordinary under him with consistent NRL players given missed finals both years…

Also any news on next year Ipswich was only a 1 year deal wasn’t it??

2024 Tweed Heads Seagulls QCup Rookie of the Year Malakhi Donovan will be back in 2025, do not be surprised if he is part of the Titans off-season in some capacity.

Former Sydney Roosters Jersey Flegg captain and NSW Cup second rower Phoenix Steinwede has signed with the Tweed Heads Seagulls for 2025.

Great to see Josh Bevan sign for the Tweed Heads Seagulls in 2025, Josh Bevan was a memebr of the Titans JTS progrtam before singing with the Sydney Roosters.

Josh Bevan played the 2024 season in the NSW Cup with the North Sydney Bears. Mayeb train and trial with the Titans?
